Collecting the information of Nepal Government diverse PublicBodies: PublicBodies Datathon

[5th March 2016] Once again, a bunch of open philosophy believers and lovers gathered for the fourth annual celebration of International Open Data Day 2016 in Nepal. This year Open Data Day was organized in three different places of Nepal and was lead by different communities. Open Knowledge Nepal in collaboration with FOSS Nepal Community and CSIT Association of Nepal, hosted a series of presentations and a PublicBodies Datathon to celebrate the global celebration of openness. The event was held in Nepal Engineers’ Association, Pulchowk, Lalitpur and started at 10 am (NST). Event planning and details can be found on the event page.

Mr. Nikesh Balami, Open Government Data Team Lead of Open Knowledge Nepal started by welcoming and thanking all the participants for joining the event. He explained what open data day is and how it has been celebrated in Nepal during the past few years.

After making a bit change in the presentation schedule, Mr. Navin Khadka representing db2map, was welcomed for the first presentation of a day. Mr. Navin described their product db2map and also shared details about their upcoming planning. Db2map helps people to visualize their data in the interactive map of Nepal, by using a simple  draging and droping method. He also shared work which they had completed in the past and how it is making an impact.

Right after the presentation of db2map, Mr. Shubham Ghimire, Volunteer of Open Knowledge Nepal was called on the stage for the presentation of NGOs in Nepal. NGOs in Nepal is the crowdsourced online directory of NGO’s located in map with their contact information. Mr. Ghimire shared how the initiative was started after the April earthquake and how people and NGO’s both benefit from it. At the end of his presentation, he asked participants to contribute by submitting additional  information on NGO’s, which they know of within their locality.

Mr. Chandan Goopta, Co-Founder of The Opnio joined the stage after the presentation of Mr. Shubham. Mr. Goopta  presented information about the Android app project of the Nepal Government lead by NITC. This app contains all the information related to the government administration. The idea behind the app is to bridge the gap between citizens and the government by taking the notices, decisions etc made by government accessible to the public. The name of an app was “NepGov Portal” and at the end of his talk, he also asked participants engaged with the project with their own contributions.

After that Mr. Nikesh Balami from Open Knowledge again joined the stage for his orientation presentation of PublicBodies Nepal. He first presented a little bit about the community “Open Knowledge Nepal” and then shared the whole concept of PublicBodies Nepal, including how the data / information will be presented and how it will be collected. He also notified participants that all of them will be working together  on  data collection during the Datathon..

Last but not the least, there was an presentation from Mr. Saroj Dhakal, Consultant for Google, and an active contributor to the Nepali Wikipedia. He presented on an upcoming project named “Open Transits Nepal”. The aim of this project is to collect the data of all transits point used by Nepali Transportation and to release those data in the Open Domain. So that anyone from all around the world can build innovative ideas around this data. After the presentation of Mr. Dhakal, the formal presentation session was completed and the coffee break started.

During coffee break, the groups split into  the  Datathon session. Right after the break Mr. Nikesh who is currently leading PublicBodies Nepal project, briefed participants and shared all the resources with them, which they would need  while collecting data. A google form was used for data collection and participants searched and trawled different government websites for one to one data collection. The Datathon was followed by many small lunch and coffee breaks. While going through many websites for the information collection, participants also identified different mistakes and updated information in many government bodies websites, which highlights the topic for further discussion. Some participants contributed the information on local public bodies. At the end of the day, more that 150 information around Nepal Government diverse public bodies was collected by the participants.

At the end of an event, Mr. Nikesh demonstrated the basic design of the PublicBodies Nepal portal, still in the development, and gathered feedbacks from participants.  The event was ended with a group photo. nd formally ends the event by asking everyone for the group photo.

International Open Data Day 2016: PublicBodies Datathon

What is Open Data Day?

Open Data Day is a global celebration of openness. It helps us to raise awareness about openness of data in different fields across the world and It unites us once a year as a community. “Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption of open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.”

The goal to mark this event is team building among open communities and beginning a series of collaborative events for enhancing knowledge and awareness about the Free and open source software, open data, open content, and various open knowledge technologies.

Who are the organizer of Open Data Day 2016 in Nepal and what gonna happen?

After organizing Open Data Day 2013, 2014 and 2015 with an huge enthusiasm, once again on the occasion of fourth annual International Open Data Day 2016, volunteers of Open Knowledge Nepal in collaboration with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Nepal Community and CSIT Association of Nepal will be running “Publicbodies Datathon”.

This year participant will work on the focused topic “PublicBodies”, where they need to hack and collect the data of different public bodies of Nepal Government and can create any things meaningful by using it. At the end of the day, we plan to combine all the works of participants and possibly will be lunching a new project / products by using those hacks and everything will be done under the open domain.

When it is going to happen?

This year International Open Data Day 2016 is going to be held on 5th March, Saturday. In Nepal we will be also celebrating it without any date changed.

What you can Expect from an Event

Come with an expectation of learning a lots of things about open data, the way of using open data for the products and missions. Event is a place where you can meet new peoples with new ideas for collaboration and can create your own network.

# Presentation / Orientation

Open Data Experts, Representative of Government and the people of different open data startups will be presenting and sharing their ideas and experiences with the participant on this session.

Participant will be working and brainstorming their hackathon ideas on this session and the CSO representative and experts will be mentoring and suggesting them.

# Datathon

Participant will work on their brainstormed ideas and will try to create some useful project from it, they will be working to bring sense from the data. At the end of the day participant and organizer, everyone will work to collect the data of PublicBodies in Nepal.

Why PublicBodies Datathon?

Slowly but steadily people nowadays had started to understand the value of Open Data and now they want their government to be more transparent and accountable with them. But in comparison with a work of an CSO and by looking at the running open data momentums, government works are far behind the game. People struggle to find data and information they needs, to say it more clearly most of the normal citizens had never understood the network of the government and it looks like now many of them are interested to know more about it. We aim to bring the information of this diverse public bodies of Nepal government at same portal / domain named “PublicBodies Nepal”

Participants of this year Open Data Day 2016 will help us to do all the basic and technical works through their hacks and data collection activities.

What is PublicBodies Nepal?

PublicBodies Nepal is an open directory, which will bring together all the contact information and documents relating to public bodies and will provide a URL for every parts of governments. Which will help both government and citizens to cut out duplication of activities and to discontinue activities which are no longer needed, this will significantly reform to increase transparency and accountability. Tracking this information and documents of an diverse public bodies will help us to create an accountable environment. The directory will help normal citizens to understand the government working hierarchy and can find everything at one place. Common citizens, donor agencies, international organization and government also wants the departments and the public bodies they sponsor to be open and accountable in all that they so, as part of a wider role in serving the public, their customers.

It helps us to raise awareness about openness of data in different fields across the world and It unites us once a year as a community. “Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption of open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.” The goal to mark this event is team building among open communities and beginning a series of collaborative events for enhancing knowledge and awareness about the Free and open source software, open data, open content, and various open knowledge technologies.

Who are the organizer of Open Data Day 2016 in Nepal and what gonna happen?

After organizing Open Data Day 2013, 2014 and 2015 with an huge enthusiasm, once again on the occasion of fourth annual International Open Data Day 2016, volunteers of Open Knowledge Nepal in collaboration with Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Nepal Community and CSIT Association of Nepal will be running “Publicbodies Datathon”. This year participant will work on the focused topic “PublicBodies”, where they need to hack and collect the data of different public bodies of Nepal Government and can create any things meaningful by using it. At the end of the day, we plan to combine all the works of participants and possibly will be lunching a new project / products by using those hacks and everything will be done under the open domain.

When it is going to happen?

This year International Open Data Day 2016 is going to be held on 5th March, Saturday. In Nepal we will be also celebrating it without any date changed.

What you can Expect from an Event

Come with an expectation of learning a lots of things about open data, the way of using open data for the products and missions. Event is a place where you can meet new peoples with new ideas for collaboration and can create your own network.

# Presentation / Orientation Open Data Experts, Representative of Government and the people of different open data startups will be presenting and sharing their ideas and experiences with the participant on this session. # Idea Discussion and Brainstorming Participant will be working and brainstorming their hackathon ideas on this session and the CSO representative and experts will be mentoring and suggesting them. # Datathon Participant will work on their brainstormed ideas and will try to create some useful project from it, they will be working to bring sense from the data. At the end of the day participant and organizer, everyone will work to collect the data of PublicBodies in Nepal.

Why PublicBodies Datathon?

Slowly but steadily people nowadays had started to understand the value of Open Data and now they want their government to be more transparent and accountable with them. But in comparison with a work of an CSO and by looking at the running open data momentums, government works are far behind the game. People struggle to find data and information they needs, to say it more clearly most of the normal citizens had never understood the network of the government and it looks like now many of them are interested to know more about it. We aim to bring the information of this diverse public bodies of Nepal government at same portal / domain named “PublicBodies Nepal” Participants of this year Open Data Day 2016 will help us to do all the basic and technical works through their hacks and data collection activities.

What is PublicBodies Nepal?

PublicBodies Nepal is an open directory, which will bring together all the contact information and documents relating to public bodies and will provide a URL for every parts of governments. Which will help both government and citizens to cut out duplication of activities and to discontinue activities which are no longer needed, this will significantly reform to increase transparency and accountability. Tracking this information and documents of an diverse public bodies will help us to create an accountable environment. The directory will help normal citizens to understand the government working hierarchy and can find everything at one place. Common citizens, donor agencies, international organization and government also wants the departments and the public bodies they sponsor to be open and accountable in all that they so, as part of a wider role in serving the public, their customers.
